The manly man who was my favorite teacher
by Md. Nazrul Islam
Almost two decades ago, I was a student of Dhaka University, my department was Bengali. We have many teachers (I am using subject we because he was favourite not only me, but also almost all students) but the manly teacher was Dr. Humayun Azad who was died by some miscreants. 12th August instant was his 10th death anniversary, so I deeply shocked this month. For this reason, I want to write something about him from my memory.
May be we were 90 students that batch. He was our favorite teacher. We liked him very much because he straight forward man. He told that which was right either it was good or bad. One day, he told in our tutorial class (remains ten to twelve students in this class) "I do not do any politics, so I could not hold the chairman of our department, although junior already holds this position." Although when we were the students, he became a chairman of Bengali department.
He took our class at third year, and the subject was "Comparative and Historical Linguistics". He was a nice teacher, he did not delay for taking even a single day. He came into class in time and outing was also just time after ringing bell. We understood his class very well and we learned something from him. Most of the teachers are good at the Dhaka University, but I think Humayun Azad sir was exception.
One day we discussed with him about his writing. A student (I forgot who) from us asked him about his famous writing "Shob Kichu Bhenge Pore", "Beter jhoper vetor je bandhobir boroboner sathe boshesilo, she ki apni nije?" He replied, "It's my writing, not person Humanyun Azad."
