What is a summary?
A summary writing is a shortened passage, which keeps the important information of the original. It is a reasonably brief restatement (in your own words) of the contents of a passage.
• We can merely report back what the writer has thought, without making value judgments.
Techniques in summary writing
Paraphrasing: To paraphrase means to completely and correctly express other people’s ideas in one’s own words.
Example: Heath is wealth. (Health is such important thing, which is countable as wealth.)
We should keep in mind that:
1. The significance of summary writing.
2. Essential elements for a good summary.
3. At first it should be mentioned: title, author, source; date of publication and the text only for journal articles.
4. Thesis statement
1. the topic or general subject matter of the text will be written;
2. the author’s major statement, observation, or place on the topic
5. We should be avoided direct quotation, and we will be used transitional words
6. Length will be the shorter, it can be 25 percent or 33 percent of the original
7. Read the article, to understand the article and find the general theme.
8. Reread the article, divide into sections and label each section, understand the important parts.
9. Write one-sentence summaries, summarize each section of thought.
